He has experience working in helicopter skiing, highway mitigation, legal risk management, avalanche education, and as the Director of a large ski resort avalanche program. Over the course of his career, he has been instrumental in the creation and implementation of large-scale avalanche programs utilizing next-generation mitigation such as Remote Avalanche Control System (RACS). This includes the planning of installations, system development and the development of a new explosive design.

Don Sharaf has worked in the avalanche field for 35 years. His background spans mountain guiding, avalanche education, avalanche forecasting for heli-ski operations and for industry, heli-ski guiding, and avalanche mitigation for industrial operations. His last four years have been spent with David Hamre and Associates, LLC performing avalanche risk analyses for industrial and urban settings, RACS analyses, quantitative risk analyses for highways, and snow safety program reviews. During his more than 25 years teaching avalanche courses to professional ski patrollers, public avalanche forecasters, highway forecasters, and guides he got to see how dozens of operations approached snow safety and risk management.
